Nick Ten Hacken

Nick ten Hacken is pulmonary physician at the University Medical Center in Groningen (UMCG) since 1994. He obtained in 1998 his PhD on airway inflammation in nocturnal asthma. In 2005 he was appointed as associate professor. His research interests include the pathofysiology of asthma and COPD, finding new treatment strategies for asthma and COPD, studying the role of small airways, recognition of the susceptible smoker, effects of acute smoking and smoking cessation, studying and enhancing the physical activity level of COPD patients.

Hylkema

Machteld Hylkema (1965) is an immunologist with a broad interest in the pathogenesis of asthma and COPD. She is involved in clinical studies as well as mouse models for asthma and COPD. Currently her research aims at the effects of maternal smoking during pregnancy with respect to neonatal lung development and development of COPD in the mouse. In addition, she is principal investigator of a Dutch Asthma Foundation grant in which the effect of Th17 signalling is investigated in relation to development of non-allergic asthma in men and mice.

Kerstjens

Huib Kerstjens is respiratory physician with a broad interest in clinical and medicine and research. He directs clinical research programs in asthma as well as COPD. Within the latter field, he is especially interested in the origins, the prevention, and the treatment of COPD exacerbations. His more basic work includes animal work encompassing amongst others a mouse model of cigarette smoke induced emphysema. He is a strong believer that team work within the GRIAC will improve outcomes of research as well as the pleasure in performing it. He is currently head of the Department of Pulmonology and Tuberculosis of the University Medical Center Groningen

van Oosterhout

As Pharmacologist and Immunologist, my major scientific interests are the immunological mechanisms leading to allergic sensitisation and subsequent progression to allergic asthma with a focus on different T-lymphocyte subsets (Th2, Treg) using mouse models. In addition, the mechanisms of action of allergen immuno-therapy are dissected and novel (immuno) therapeutic strategies are explored. Recombinant congenic strains of mice are used to identify novel susceptibility genes and their corresponding proteins. Functional genomics strategies (e.g. gene targeting in vitro and in vivo) are used to determine protein function of asthma susceptibility genes and their role in asthma pathogenesis.

Peter Wijkstra

Peter Wijkstra (1959) is a pulmonary physician since 2000. From 2003 he is head of the department of Home mechanical ventilation which is nowadays part of the department of Pulmonary medicine. While his research in the past focussed mainly on pulmonary rehabilitation it has moved towards respiratory insufficiency and sleep apnea. Current studies investigate both patients with COPD as well as patients with neuromuscular disease. The focus in sleep apnea is on different interventions and association with other diseases like heart failure. In 2007 he was appointed associate professor in pulmonary medicine and was also elected as the president of the Dutch Society of Physicians for Respiratory Diseases and Tuberculosis (NVALT).
