Once the drug has been through rigorous chemical analysis and clinical trials, it must be approved for use in human populations by the Food and Drug Administration in the United States or the governing regulating body of a particular nation.

Governing bodies generally require a wide range of peer-reviewed research to determine whether or not to allow a drug to be given to a population. Only once all of these processes are successfully completed can a drug actually go to market and be administered to patients.
